AUTUMN 2011 HARVEST
Information and pictures from the 2011 Autumn harvest.
October 2011
Last week was dedicated to harvesting fish from this years spawnings, including a very successful Shiro Utsuri harvest, some of which can be seen below. The exciting thing about these fish is that the father of these fish is one of our very own Shiro, grown on from a previous year!
Below are some other selected individuals from this years breeding.
September 2011
More fish have just been added to the shop, from 10-14". These excellent Shiro, Chagoi, and Kigoi are now available starting at £40.
August Bank Holiday 2011 (2)
More examples of the fish harvested for the bank holiday can be seen below. Many of these are from sample nets of our mud ponds. Available from £30-£70 each.
August Bank Holiday 2011
Although not officially the start of our Autumn Harvest, unfortunately here on the farm we have to start planning for the colder months ahead already! We are starting to move a few fish to the shop for sales over the bank holiday period, so come and see us over the holiday, avoid the crowded beaches and go home with some of our freshest stock! After so long with relatively low stocks, it is nice to get some fish back into the shop to show you all!

Update from Richard
Positive points from 2010 Harvest
We have produced the best fish in our history from the following varieties:
Kohaku, Shiro Utsuri, Showa, Goshiki, Goromo, Gin Rin Goshiki, Doitsu Kujaku
Negative points:
No Shusui, no normal scaled Kujaku, and too few good sanke, chagoi or ochiba.
Despite 20 years breeding Koi, the learning curve continues!
We have learnt more agin this year about certain parent fish and suitable combinations. Developments in fry pond preparation and warm early season temperatures have led to an impressive year alround. However, there is always room for improvement. We will continue to strive each year to improve on the last, to get the full potential from the farm and available broodfish.
The quality of the best tosai this season are far superior to the original Japanese parent Koi from 10 years ago, and of a higher level (we believe) than most of the koi available in the present market place.
Unfortunately these fish number in the 10's-100's, not the thousands that would be needed to supply the demand for high grade Koi that we experience these days.
Despite this, the good news from all this is that the quality of our standard grade fish is increasing all the time, and with lots available, most people should be able to get the Koi they require at a very reasonable cost.
As a final note, we are fast approaching a point we have been aiming for for some time. That is the total self reliance in terms of broodstock. We are almost at a point where we can use our own fish as parents to carry on the original Japanese bloodlines, such is the quality of the fish in recent years. This fact, along with the original Japanese fish gives us unbeatable flexibility come breeding season.

Here is a sneaky look at some of the better fish from this years spawnings. Hopefully in the future we will be able to compare them with the mature adult they develop into! With a lot of fish between 12-17cm, it has been a good seasons growth, especially for some of the earlier spawnings. These fish took full advantage of the early summer temperatures. Later spawnings that went out to the ponds early August have not faired so well! I'm afraid none of the fish below will be available yet, they are amongst the top percentage that must be grown on. We do however have lots of fish between one and five inches available in various grades, so get in touch as soon as possible if you have the facilities to grow these on through the winter!

Last week was spent starting the harvest of all the fish from this years breedings. This is one of the most exciting times in a koi farmers year, where we really get to see what a summers worth of hard work has produced. The series of photos below shows Rick tending to the grading of a pond of Kohaku. We will aim to show you pictures of some of the better fish to come from the harvest soon.
